In the UK we are hurtling into Spring and oh it's so welcome to see the Cherry Blossom, the nodding daffodils, the crocus smudges.

During this Q1 2021 lockdown, our houses have been our kingdoms and the indoor plants have been our focus.

Here are our top 5 houseplants - if you voted in our Instagram story pole, has yours made the cut?

1) Chlorophytum Comosum - The Spider Plant

  • Very versatile plant which can be grown in a wide range of conditions

  • Available in green or variegated varieties

  • Spiderettes form freely!

"Easy to keep, and purify the air!"
@burgesswrigh

2) Crassula Ovata (Jade Plant)

  • A lucky plant, money plant or money tree

  • A succulent - small pink or white flowers

  • Native to the Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa

"A robust plant, can cope with varying temperatures, even a little drought!"
@lucykehoe

3) Cactus

Technically the jade plant above is a cactus, however, I think most people understand cactus to mean spiky and can copy with weeks of neglect!

  • Fleshy stems often bearing spines

  • Brilliantly coloured flowers

  • Native to arid regions

"Cactus have wonderful shapes and sizes! Great sculpture in the home complementing and contrasting to the soft furnishings."
@tony_kehoe

4) Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily)

  • Tropical and evergreen plants

  • Need dappled sunlight and consistent moisture

  • White to off-white flowers (Summer)

"The glossy leaves shine whatever the season, lush plants with the flowers being the icing on the cake"
@scones_sunflowers

4) Pilea Peperomioides (Missionary Plant)

  • An erect evergreen perennial to 30cm or more

  • Fleshy, rounded, long-stalked mid-green leaves to 10cm in length

  • Tiny pale green flowers sometimes tinged pink

"Easy to grow, stunning circular leaves and produces lots of babies"
@heather_andhome

As we turn our attention to the outside don't forget about our trusty indoor companions. They will quietly adjust to the longer days and warmer conditions but keep an eye on them they may just wink back!
